To understand ectopic humoral syndromes, it is necessary to differentiate between two separate conditions ΓÇô ectopic humoral syndromes and ectopic production of bioactive substances ΓÇô since these indicate different concepts (Fig. 21.2). In the case of peptide hormones, these two entities are referred to as ectopic hormone syndrome and ectopic hormone production, respectively. The former refers to clinically recognisable humoral syndromes caused by bioactive substances produced ectopically, while the latter indicates neoplasms that elaborate substances, irrespective of clinically obvious humoral manifestations.
